چکیده
This paper presents the results of a study aiming at shape optimising singly-symmetric cold-formed steel purlins. The “self-shape” optimisation algorithm previously developed, proven to be robust and converge known solutions is used for this purpose. Eight cases are considered, consisting 1.5 mm 1.9 thick purlins, spanning either 3000 or 8000 drawn with 4, 6 8 elements per half cross-section. aim minimise cross-sectional area subjected following constraints: (i) sections must least match second moment area, inward outward bending capacities commercial purlins as reference profiles, (ii) readily manufacturable using existing roll-forming process, (iii) can connected similarly by offering vertical horizontal flat long enough strategically positioned bolt gusset plates screw roof them, respectively, (iv) have an opening wide run services. restraints provided sheeting considered in when calculating capacities. Results show that converges consistent satisfactory satisfies all constraints, resulting useable When compared optimised result saving up 6.6% steel. cost material quite significant mass-produced product such efficiency relative were further validated FE analysis. analyses confirm superior section. may therefore benefit industry they represent more economical without compromising on usability performance products. On Cold-Formed Steel Construction
Powder-actuated (also referred to as low velocity or powder-driven) fasteners are commonly used to attach cold-formed steel framing members, usually a track, to a concrete or structural steel support. Although commonly used, their behavior is less well understood than other fasteners such as screws, bolts and welds. The AISI Cold-Formed Steel Design Manual does not explicitly address powder act...
متن کاملComputational Modeling of Cold-formed Steel
The objective of this paper is to summarize recent research and experiences with computational modeling of cold-formed steel conducted within the author’s research group at Johns Hopkins University. This admittedly biased view of computational modeling focuses primarily on the use of the semi-analytical finite strip method and collapse modeling using shell finite elements. Issues addressed incl...
متن کاملCold-formed steel structures around the world
Today, cold-formed steel (CFS) structures enjoy widespread use in many countries and design specifications, e.g., [1] and [2] are well established, even if they are ever changing! Extensive reviews of the CFS literature are available [3], [4] and more targeted research reviews also exist: [5], [6] and Chapter 13 of [7]. However, even in the last five years significant progress has been made, pa...
متن کاملReview on Cold-Formed Steel Connections
The concept of cold-formed light steel framing construction has been widespread after understanding its structural characteristics with massive research works over the years. Connection serves as one of the important elements for light steel framing in order to achieve its structural stability. Compared to hot-rolled steel sections, cold-formed steel connections perform dissimilarity due to the...
متن کاملSimulation of conventional cold-formed steel sections formed from Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS)
The objective of this paper is to explore the potential impact of the use of advanced high strength steel (AHSS) to form traditional cold-formed steel structural members. In this study, shell finite element models are constructed, and geometric and material nonlinear collapse analysis performed, on simulated lipped channel cross-section cold-formed steel members roll-formed from AHSS. AHSS shee...
